This is a list of iPad apps I like. I hope to keep it fairly updated. I may even organize it.

PocketCloud – excellent RDP and VNC client. I have the Pro, but the free version is also good. Stable when using VPN and RDP. If these acronyms do not make sense, think remote desktop.

CNET – I use this app for tech news more than any other.

ESPN ScoreCenterXL – The only sports app I currently have.

NBC and ABC Player – no subscription needed. Awaiting the CBS app. (taps foot)

IMDB – great to use while watching a movie. I like to read about the actors and the movie trivia.

Pandora – The only music streaming app I use.

DropBox -no need for a USB port on the iPad.

Fing – IP scanner for your wireless network. Netmaster HD does not find as many devices as Fing, but it resolves iPhone names.

Skitch – I have not needed this drawing app, yet. The ability to easily draw on photos and maps is what I like about it.

YouVersion Bible – The audio feature is terrific. The whole app is terrific.

Google Earth - I occasionally like to travel the world.

Words HD Free – linked to FaceBook. This free app will not spam your FB wall. The ads are not annoying. May eventually pay for this. Currently only playing 2 games. No plans to ever play Angry Birds.

Last update 2/19/2012

I cannot view my WIFI security cams with the latest version of Google Chrome. I have two LinkSys Wireless-N Internet Home Monitoring Camera WVC80N devices. Version 17.0.963.46m lets me connect to the cameras, but I cannot display the video. Two Windows computers have been updated to this version. I will test my Mac Air later today. (EDIT – it does not work on my Mac Air. I also submitted the issue to Google)

This is not critical as I can use Internet Explorer to view the cameras. I may find time this weekend to “Google” a quick fix.

Friday January 20th, I tried to add a few apps to my iPhone, both timed out with the message “Cannot connect to the iTunes Store”. I tried WIFI and 3G. At home I tried adding apps to my WIFI iPad 2 and received the same message. I connected each device to my laptop with iTunes running and the apps loaded. I did not sync anything. I use iCloud for that. So the quick response to “Cannot connect to the iTunes Store” is to connect the device to a PC or Mac running iTunes. Do not sync, just try to install the app.

Why?

Over the holidays I ran into a unique situation. My parents router has the same name as my router. Their WIFI has no security, my router has WPA2. Each device had some difficulty with the duplicate name.

My wife’s Vista laptop gave us the most trouble, with difficulty connecting at my parents and connecting after we got back home. (Hopefully we will upgrade this laptop to Win7 in 2012)

My Mac Air decided that my home network was no longer a preferred network, so I had to go into Network Preferences and delete and re-create the WIFI connection.

My iPhone and iPad did not automatically re-connect to our home WIFI when we returned. Once again I had to go clean up my WIFI settings.

I can’t remember if my Dell laptop running Win7-64 gave me any trouble, but I did remove my parents WIFI network from the list when I returned. In the list it just added a 2 to the end.

One thing about cleaning up WIFI settings, it makes you realize how much you have travelled over the years.

This year I have purchased the following:

February – Mac Air 11″ 64g
May – iPhone 4 (Verizon) 16g
December – iPad 2 – 16g WIFI only

All 3 products have been superb. The Air had a shaky start, but with Lion and a few patches it runs great. Basically it took forever to wake from sleep, and made the loud power-on chime even when it was supposed to be disabled. The iPad and iPhone both have excellent batteries. They do their job. They work.

Why all the Apple? I felt the need to learn all I could about their products. I am glad I did.
