We received an email offer earlier in the day. Last year we tried the free month and cancelled. There were too many hiccups with streaming, and a poor choice of movies. To play movies on our HDTV, we had to use an HDMI cable from either the Dell laptop or Mac Air.  While it worked, it took too long to setup.

This year we have Apple TV.

We tested Netflix on the iPad and then on Apple TV. The stuttering was still apparent on the iPad, (it was only 1 test, I plan to do more) but not using Apple TV. The iPad (or iPhone) is basically the controller. The Netflix iPad app is also a good tool to find movies to watch. Over the next few weeks if we are able to consistently watch movies and TV, we will become Netflix customers.

My view on Apple TV?  It’s worth the 99$ if you have an iPad. The AirPlay feature is rather powerful. I await the update to Mac OS that will allow AirPlay with my Mac Air.

Security

For security I use the two step sign on verification. This makes it difficult to hack my Gmail account. A text is sent to my cell phone to complete the sign in.  For example, using Gmail in Google Chrome, I stay signed in for 30 days. This is time consuming to get initially set up, and it is a bit complicated, but in the long run I feel it is worth the effort.

Google Voice.

Google Voice is used to override my Verizon voicemail on my iPhone. I get an email transcript with a link to an MP3 of the voicemail.

PocketCloud – excellent RDP and VNC client. I have the Pro, but the free version is also good.  Stable when using VPN and RDP. If these acronyms do not make sense, think remote desktop.

CNET – I use this app for tech news more than any other.

ESPN ScoreCenterXL – The only sports app I currently have.

NBC and ABC Player – no subscription needed. Awaiting the CBS app.  (taps foot)

IMDB – great to use while watching a movie. I like to read about the actors and the movie trivia.

Pandora – The only music streaming app I use.

DropBox -no need for a USB port on the iPad.

Fing – IP scanner for your wireless network.  Netmaster HD does not find as many devices as Fing, but it resolves iPhone names.

Skitch – I have not needed this drawing app, yet. The ability to easily draw on photos and maps is what I like about it.

YouVersion Bible – The audio feature is terrific. The whole app is terrific.

Google Earth - I occasionally like to travel the world.

Words HD Free – linked to FaceBook.  This free app will not spam your FB wall.  The ads are not annoying. May eventually pay for this.  Currently only playing 2 games. No plans to ever play Angry Birds.

I have two LinkSys Wireless-N Internet Home Monitoring Camera WVC80N devices. Version 17.0.963.46m lets me connect to the cameras, but I cannot display the video. Two Windows computers have been updated to this version. I will test my Mac Air later today. (EDIT – it does not work on my Mac Air. I also submitted the issue to Google)

Latest Google Chrome update interferes with LinkSys WIFI Cams.

This is not critical as I can use Internet Explorer to view the cameras. I may find time this weekend to “Google” a quick fix.

I tried WIFI and 3G. At home I tried adding apps to my WIFI iPad 2 and received the same message. I connected each device to my laptop with iTunes running and the apps loaded. I did not sync anything. I use iCloud for that. So the quick response to “Cannot connect to the iTunes Store” is to connect the device to a PC or Mac running iTunes. Do not sync, just try to install the app.
